This interview is about NIGHTMARE's single, "SHIAN" in which RUKA both wrote and arranged. This interview was a real pain because there were many confusing parts..I really tried to make sense out of it but well...it wasn't easy O_O So I'm sorry if it doesn't make much sense T_T

INT: "SHIAN" is the 5th maxi single you guys released. How did you choose this song?
RUKA: Actually this time, when we were going to release a single, we only had two choices.
INT: Were the two songs, "SHIAN" and "Tsuki no Hikari, Utsutsu no Yume"?
RUKA: Hmm....those two (turns to the other members to confirm) right?
YOMI: No, there were more! We already had "SHIAN" and "Tsuki no Hikari, Utsutsu no Yume" from the very beginning but I forgot who's song is it (forgot who wrote it). But I clearly remmber that there was a song with a temporary title of, "Inoshishi" too *laughs* But I don't know where it went. If I remember correctly though, we had around 4-5 songs.
INT: So little?
RUKA: Mmm...eh? *laughs*
HITSUGI: Mmm...*laughs*
INT: Did you use a lot of Pin Point to make your songs?
RUKA: Mmm...usually when we we're going to release a single, we would begin selecting from many songs with the feeling, "this time we're going to go with this song." So it is not often when we put together 10 songs and carefully choose from them. This time we had more songs than usual becuse it's a single we're releasing while we're doing an album. So we decided to release them at once. We also have songs that we haven't used yet too.
INT: You don't really keep backup songs?
RUKA: Because it's changed to this through time *laughs* So we don't do it much. (I think what he means is that their songs change through time, so nothing is really in "backup" -D.T.)
SAKITO: Of couse we take notes of the "phrases" that pop into our heads....write write write, write until we forget.

YOMI: If we said that this time we have a theme, will it sound cooler? *laughs* As you all know, because we had the feeling to bring out the special and distinct feel of autumn, we decided to write this song. There are many songs that would make the listener truly "feel" the season. When winter or fall comes, a number of ballad songs would be released. Because they're the type of seaons that make you want to listen to that kind of song. So we came up with a rough theme of, "making a song that will put the listener into a trance so they'll listen to it over and over again" And out came this song.
INT: If you put it that way, then it's just like the last single you released?
YOMI: Yeah, yeah. If I remember correctly, SAKITO said that he would "write lyrics that makes one think of autumn" too.
SAKITO: Because it's the image of the sky in the evening or of autumn.
NIYA: The PV also gives off that feeling.
RUKA: We might not have been thinking of seasonal feelings at the time though *laughs* Because my feelings at the time were more the HATE side. Before we even thought of a theme, I had already brought out cruel songs *laughs* The meaning of "SHIAN" this time, is a feeling that I thought of and did. It can seep into the bones of the listener, so I sat down and brought it out the way my heart felt.
INT: The incident that happened turned into a bone? (this guy just goes with the flow ^O^" -D.T.)
RUKA: It's not something that happened recently, it happened when I was in junior high. I recalled the incredible impact of falling from such a high to a low life, and I wrote it out. I wrote about a situation that I never want to go back to again, in the song. After I finished junior high, it was a wild time and I went out all night. I didn't go to school and didn't do anything for about a year. In the lyrics, there is the word, "kimi" but actually it's about music.
INT: That's right, when I put in "music" instead of the "kimi" part, it gives off a totally different feel. That's very odd?
RUKA: Yes. The color...of poison (in this case, cyanide) and the new mixed words. This word can be interpreted 3 different ways (I think here he's talking about the word "shian" (cyan), which is a blue-green color, a poison (cyanide), and the feeling of autumn -D.T.).

INT: The word "SHIAN" sounds so gloomy, people probably won't think of is as the color of autumn. How does all this connect? I'm confused.
RUKA: Well the color doesn't have any deep connection at the moment. The meaning of it, though, is a new word that I mixed up, and it came out as "poison" which deeply ties into the lyrics of the song. The first part, SHI and the other one, AN mixed and became a new word in which I attributed meaning to. It's a specific word. And of course a new word like that will have great repercussions: most people can't read it *laughs* Either that they don't know how to pull out that word, and don't know how to give meaning to it. I did wonder if I overdid it *laughs* Because in English, the image of potassium cyanide is too violent. And if I wrote it in katakana (the Japanese characters used for writing foreign words) it would look weird. Because I think that the color of autumn is that of a warm-colored cotten thread. So the word "SHIAN" gives off a different feeling: "the coldness of one's feelings." It's a play on the word. I hope that's not too out-of-this-world *laughs* (okay, this part was a major pain in the neck X_X It was very hard to translate, I did try my best though >O< Basically, RUKA just talks about the name of the song and how it's a new word that he created....and how it many possible meanings so it is hard for people to comprehend...something along those lines..I think? sowi O_O -D.T.)
INT: If you put in the direct word into the title, the feeling totally disappears huh? (he probably means if you put "potassium cyanide" in as the title -D.T.)
RUKA: Exactly. It'd be nice if I could just take care it with words alone. But when I wrote it as katakana it had no meaning in it. The #1 difference is that the world that I want becomes bloated. (I honestly have no idea what he's talking about here...-D.T.).


INT: You used the akogi (acoustic guitar) as your main?
RUKA: Yeah, first of all, I wanted to do it so I did *laughs* Songs where you shout out all your heart are called folk songs right? There are a lot of those. So that's the image I got.
INT: Making the lyrics of a folk song into non-fiction or making something you're interested in into a song happens a lot in the music industry. More than that, is the harsh guitar sound in this song a main feature?
HITSUGI: Because RUKA-san didn't want us to put in the guitar here so we didn't. Therefore, we only used bass sounds. We mixed it up and arranged the song countless time with SAKITO's guitar. In the end, it somehow worked out as you see it now.
HITSUGI (don't ask my why he has two different lines -D.T.): Usually when you're arranging the guitar sounds you have to think of the lyrics of the song too right? They say that a musician's hunch will make the song sound more beautiful; that's probably true *laughs*
NIYA: When you're doing the phrase, don't forget if the lyrics haven't reached their destination yet! *laughs*


SAKITO: Hmm...if you think about that deeply, the feeling where you really delve into the heart of the song is essential. If you think and argue about it logically, the drums and the bass would help one sing better. I think that the guitar just adds some flavor to it.
NIYA: You say that, but this time the akogi (acoustic guitar) really stands out.
YOMI: Personally, I like the atmosphere of section A. This time I really stuck with section A, I took time to really understand it and sang it out loud. At first it was very rough and unruly but when RUKA-san said, "try singing it without cutting out your own feelings" so I was able to sing it.
RUKA: What should I say? *laughs*
INT: *laughs* And what about the coupling song, "Tsuki no Hikari, Utsutsu no Yume"? It starts out with the story of being lead by a voice that's so dream-like it's beyond reality, which we don't really know what it is right?
YOMI: Right, but we didn't have that at first. But then SAKITO said, "I want to put some story into the listeners' heads" (sounds cruel) so we put it in at the very end. It's not even written down on the lyrics card, think about that *laughs* But the story in it, SAKITO wrote it himself, I didn't do anything.
SAKITO: My own theme was, "a long night during the autumn with a romantic person" *laughs* Because it has a certain proportion with the feeling of reality I think that even if the lyrics for this one has the feeling of someone looking out at a faraway land, this song still has that kind of image (his theme). It came out the way YOMI ordered *laughs*


INT: It seems that the singing really gives of a Japanese-like feeling. But did you already think of that?
SAKITO: Yes, we did. Sitting on a wooden balcony of a Japanese house and watching the moon...something like that. Right, right the temporary name of the song was actually "TSUKIMI" (moon viewing) *laughs* After that the scale of the melody and the phrase was a Japanese one. We usually use min'you or douyou (traditional/folk songs and nursery rhymes), I still like to listen to those types of songs. And it suits, NHK's "MINNA NO UTA" too *laughs* (it's an NHK showcase where they play various songs coupled with cute little animations targeted at kids. He probably says it here beccause he wants NHK to play it XD -D.T.). A children's lullaby just flows on and on, it's very relaxed. A great feeling. The atmosphere of the melody goes from one Japanese to another Japanese but of course, you can really feel it seep into your body well *laughs* Now it's come to that I want to make songs that make myself feel good *laughs*
INT: Up until now, SAKITO usually sticks with songs that use sneaky plans and sounds right? How do you, RUKA, handle the feeling that the person responsible likes songs that Japanese people like? Isn't is a bit much? (wha---?? O_o -D.T.)
RUKA: Because our songs are easy to understand, it's very relaxing.
SAKITO: Songs that make RUKA-san is a pop song with the feeling of umm.....easy to listen to. I guess we started to like this type recently! The thing called melody flows to the very origin of Japanese people, which is apparent in the traditional songs that we talked about.
HITSUGI: Those kinds of atmospheres probably do exist. You listen to this song and feel very calm and cool. You feel relaxed and sleepy *laughs* When you listen to the melody, the first thing you think of is the scenery of the countryside that connects to man parts of the song. That meaning isn't too hard to understand. See, we made the sound easy to listen to.
NIYA: We really stick with the sound, we have to play the notes very delicately so it'll give off the right feeling.
SAKITO: If I remember correctly, the guitar recording of this song was really awesome. But even if I see the sound in my head, and I try playing it out loud and it doesn't come out like I want it to, or I misplay it, I feel disgusted *laughs* Recently, all these sounds pop into my head and I feel "this is it!" and when I can't sing it out the way I want to, I feel like I can't swallow it nor can I spit it out (this is a Thai saying so I just gave the literal translation. You can still kinda get the meaning though, it's just the feeling of being "stuck" and you just can't get rid of it -D.T.)

INT: That's the forever topic of making music. Now! Let's stop talking about your new songs and talk about your TOUR CPU 2004 GH2 that's going to start this winter in October?
YOMI: The tour that ended on the 30th...tired tired tired! *laughs* The last tour became a lesson so now I feel like I've grown a lot and I will try harder.
HITSUGI: ippon ippon bishit bishit bishit!
